When a product is 60% off, the reasonable question is: why? Clearance stock? Design flaw? Better model incoming? We bought the LastaForest Portable Rechargeable Coffee Grinder, used it daily for several weeks, and can now give an honest answer to that question.
Quick verdict
- Grind quality: excellent — consistent particle size across settings
- Battery life: rated 15 cups, tested at 18 cups on medium grind
- Build quality: stainless steel, solid, no plastic taste
- Portability: compact, fits in a laptop bag
- Value at $265: exceptional — this is a $400+ grinder at discount
Grind quality — the thing that actually matters
The most important question with any grinder: does it produce consistent particle sizes? Inconsistent grind = uneven extraction = muddled coffee taste. We tested across five grind settings from fine (espresso range) to coarse (French press).
At medium grind — where most pour over users will live — the consistency is genuinely good. Better than anything we've tested at this price point, and comparable to grinders that retail for significantly more. At fine (espresso) settings, it's adequate for home use. If you're pulling shots for a competition, you'd want a dedicated espresso grinder. For daily home espresso, this is excellent.
Battery life — does it match the claims?
LastaForest claims 15+ cups per charge via USB-C. We pushed it to 18 cups at medium grind before it requested charging. Charge time from flat is approximately 90 minutes. The battery indicator is simple but effective — you'll know before you're caught mid-grind.
Build quality
The outer body is stainless steel. The burr assembly is also metal. There's minimal plastic in the grinding pathway, which matters because plastic can impart taste over time. The overall feel is solid — not heavy, but not light in the way cheap products feel light. It's a grinder you'd expect to pay more for.
"I've owned four grinders in five years trying to find something portable that doesn't compromise quality. This one ended the search."
Why is it 60% off?
We asked. LastaForest is running a promotional discount on this model — it's a periodic sale rather than a clearance event. There's no design flaw, no incoming replacement model, no defect batch. The sale is real, and at $265 (down from $660) it's one of the best value grinders available right now in Australia. We can't say how long the discount lasts.
Who should buy this
This grinder makes sense if you fall into any of these categories: you're currently buying pre-ground coffee and want to upgrade; you travel frequently and want fresh-ground coffee without packing a separate grinder; you have a pour over setup and want to improve your grind consistency; or you want a compact grinder that doesn't take up permanent bench space.
Who should look elsewhere
If you're pulling espresso professionally or at competition level, you need a dedicated single-dose espresso grinder with higher precision burrs. This grinder is excellent for home use but isn't built for the extreme consistency that competition espresso demands.
